Father Brian A. Izzo is the pastor of Our Lady of Charity Parish, located in Brrokhaven, Pennsylvania. He recently stated that due to financial issues, he was suggesting to officials of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia that the school be closed at the end of the school year.
“After a final consultation with the Parish Finance and Pastoral Councils on Monday evening (Jan. 17), while reflecting upon the serious financial situation of our parish, they sadly agree that we can no longer continue to subsidize our own catholic school,” wrote Izzo.
Izzo cited increasing costs, lower enrollment and unpaid debt as the principal reasons for the move.
“Over the past five years, our enrollment has dropped 39 percent,” he said. “Next year, were we to remain open, I would not have the financial resources to guarantee that I would meet payroll for our faculty and school staff … Our parish is in considerable debt, even given the wonderful generosity of the people here.”
